Avoiding Ear Infection Complications: Consult a Pediatric ENT Los Angeles
Ear infection is the most common ailment in young children. Statistics indicate that most children will have an ear infection at least once during their first three years. The medical term for this infection is otitis media or OM.
Children suffer from ear infections more frequently than adults partly because their Eustachian tubes, which connect the ear to the back of the throat, are narrow and more level than in older children and adults. This can hinder the ability of fluid to drain from the ear. When the tubes are inflamed or blocked due to a cold, fluid builds up behind the eardrum and causes inflammation and pain in the middle ear.
Symptoms of Ear Infection in Infants and Toddlers
Children who cannot yet speak must rely on their caregivers to interpret their actions. Symptoms of ear infection include tugging at the ear, crying, fever, sleeplessness and problems with balance. Additionally children may have fluid draining from the ear and may have difficulty hearing quiet sounds.
Most ear infections clear up without complications. However frequent or persistent infections can result in serious complications including:
- Hearing loss – temporary and permanent
- Spread of infection to other tissues such as adenoids
- Perforated eardrum
- Developmental speech delays
Treatment for Otitis Media
Once a diagnosis has been made, antibiotics will be prescribed possibly along with pain medication. Dr. Aminpour will want to re-examine the ears once the medication has been finished to ensure that there is no lasting infection. Even after a course of antibiotics there may still be some lingering infection which can flare up. Children do not have a fully functioning immune system and care must be taken to ensure there are no complications.
